The vast majority of our furniture and accessories are made in our own workshops. In addition, we are always searching the world for those highly-skilled artisans who can make specific components to meet our design and quality expectations.

What is the difference between a reproduction and an adaptation?
A reproduction implies that it is made of the same materials, using the same techniques of the original and the same size as the original. An adaptation may use modern techniques or improved materials, which are superior to the antique and can differ in scale from the antique to conform to contemporary ideas of comfort and durability.

What is a veneer?
A veneer is a thin slice of exotic wood or other materials used decoratively. It is applied over a thicker backing for substance and strength. Veneers are usually fine or rare woods. Maitland-Smith is one of the few companies, which has also learned how to use rare stone, metal and shell veneers.

What is the difference between marquetry and parquetry?
Marquetry is a combination of fine and rare woods inlaid to create decorative motifs. Parquetry is used to describe this same process, where the decoration is configured in a geometric design. An example of parquetry would be a star motif of contrasting woods. An example of marquetry would be a flower, a seashell or a leaf motif made of contrasting woods. Most parquetry and marquetry are made of veneers of fine woods, but materials like brass and mother of pearl may be used in the same manner.

Can I put your bronze items outdoors?
Our bronze items are not intended for outdoor use. While the patina suggests fine bronze, which is an alloy of copper and tin, our items are made of brass. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and will not weather as well as bronze in an outdoor environment.

Are your porcelains hand painted or hand decorated?
Our blue and white underglazed porcelains are all handpainted by skilled artisans using our own proprietary designs. Slight variations from one piece to another are considered artistic contributions, imparting a unique character to each piece.

How can I be certain I am purchasing a genuine Maitland-Smith item?
Every authentic Maitland-Smith item will carry the Maitland-Smith brand in some location. It may be a brass plate in a drawer or a gold leaf label on the base of a table lamp. Remember – every single Maitland-Smith piece will have the authentic brand name displayed – no matter how small. Look for the Maitland-Smith name to ensure genuine value and surround yourself with timeless quality in your home.
