LM1997

Item: LM1997

This hand carved wood mirror frame in distressed fruitwood finish with antique gold metal leaf gilded accents is in the Renaissance Revival style. The style was popular during the 19th century throughout Western Europe and the Americas. Like many revival styles of the nineteenth century, it represents an affectionate look back at past decorative styles.

Our finely carved adaptation is far larger than any mirror made during the Renaissance. Glass plate of any

kind was a new product at the time, and only small plate glass was possible due to the technical difficulties of the era. Mirrors of any kind were rare and considered prized objects by the few patrons who could afford them.

The strap work design of the frame is typical of the period and can be found throughout the decorative arts of the 14th and 15th century. The addition of hand gilding is a luxury feature, since it was genuine gold foil and quite an expensive material.

Like many of our hand carved solid wood mirror frames, this antique white finished version is representative of the attention to detail and the skill of a master wood carver. The antique gold accents of the frame serve to highlight the clusters of roses which form two crescents above and below the round beveled mirror.

The background of the rectangular frame features an ogee edged fielded panel which serves as a counterpoint to the organic shapes of the flowers. The style of the mirror is neoclassic. The relaxed antique white background transforms the formal aspects of the style, thus enabling it to work in numerous settings.

The geometric form of this hand carved sunburst mirror frame takes its inspiration from the Art Deco period. The formal sunburst image itself dates to the middle of the eighteenth century and was the personal emblem of Louis the Fourteenth, King of France. Earlier sunburst devices can be seen throughout history, particularly in ancient Egypt.

Our large scale adaptation is finished in a hand burnished golden bronze patina.

The design consists of three overlapping radiating rectangles with a stylized floral carved central roundel. The mirror has a hand polished beveled edge, a detail found on quality mirrors.

Our hand carved solid wood rectangular mirror frame is an elegant interpretation of a mid-nineteenth century original. The grape and leaf motif dates back to the earliest civilization of the Mediterranean area. Minoan, Greek and Roman artisans employed this indigenous fruiting vine as a symbol of civilization and hospitality in a variety of materials and media. Prized for its fruit as well as the intoxicating by-product, wine, the grape was an important agricultural product particularly in the countries bordering the northern Mediterranean. The frame is accented with hand applied gold metal leaf which has been artfully burnished to a warm antique patina. The mirrored plate has a beveled edge, a quality feature found on many La Barge mirrors.

LM2322

This finely carved antique white finished mirror frame is classic Baroque in style.

The elaborate openwork crest of the frame is a symmetrical composition of interlacing scrolls accented by beautifully realized acanthus leaves. This particular adaptation is finished to suggest the traditional use of white gesso, an undercoating laid down prior to gilding.

The design employs the use of a bold ogee molding to visually call attention to the fine openwork tracery carving. Here, too, the mirror plate is beveled to add a refractive quality to the piece.

The highly expressive Baroque style of this hand carved cocktail table with wood framed inset glass top is an excellent example of this formal style, popular during the 17th and early 18th century.

The table is a formal arrangement of scrolling motifs which serves as the base for the simple geometry of the cut corner ogee molded top. The finish is a many step, hand rubbed warm honey tone suggestive of a traditional fruitwood. The carved acanthus leaves are hand gilded with an antique patina which serves to highlight the formal aspects of the table.
