At Maitland-Smith, we are celebrating our award-winning showing during the fall International Home Furnishings Market, the pre-eminent home furnishings event in the world. Moreover, as the days grow shorter and the crisp winds of autumn give way to Jack Frost, we are preparing for the time-honored traditions of the holiday season, the perfect occasion to reflect upon the importance of family, friends and home.

To this end, in the spirit of the season, Maitland-Smith is proud to donate a portion of our furniture market revenues to the American Red Cross, which cares for so many in need around the globe.

Golden Bronze Patina Brass Female Figure Table Torchere

This forty-two inch tall table torchere is a unique Maitland-Smith adaptation of an Art Deco design. The Art Deco period flourished between the First and Second World War and influenced both architecture and the decorative arts.

It used the prevailing modern design of airplanes and automobiles as its inspiration. The air stream or streamlined sensibility of industrial design was adopted by trend-setting designers to create a new, very modern set of shapes and forms. New materials like aluminum, glass bricks and machine-aided production helped reflect the maturity of the industrial age.

Lost Wax Casting and Repoussé: Revered Ancient Arts Endure at Maitland-Smith

BY HOWARD SHATTUCK

Have you ever marveled at prized museum exhibits of ancient sculpture depicting long-lost cultural and religious traditions? Or perhaps you’ve been awed by the creative genius demonstrated by metal jewelry dating back to 2000 B.C., so intricate and unique, it seemed more appropriately named “art” than decorative adornment. Noting the antiquity of such marvelous pieces is humbling and compels us to ask, “How in the world did they accomplish such complex artistry so long ago?”

In our wonderment, we are not alone. Metal working has always been regarded as one of the decorative arts’ highest achievements. We find it expressed in gold, in uncovered tombs dating back to the Minoan, Phoenician and Egyptian civilizations, as well as in other relics discovered across the continents, including ancient ceremonial imagery, religious deities, and reflections of nature and the human form.

The Buzz:
Hiving at Home

Cocooning is passé. Hiving is all the rage.

While it may sound like these trends are referring to the habits of insects, it’s really all about how Americans are interacting with their homes. First, it was about comfort and connectedness to family. Now, it is about opening our doors to neighbors and friends, and expressing creativity and camaraderie through home entertainment.

Maitland Smith Announces Award-Winning Showroom
We are celebrating our "Consumer Allure" award received at the fall International Home Furnishings Market for our East West Passage collection showroom. This collection reflects an enduring fascination with the "Far East" with the clean edited lines of transitional styling. Both Chinese and Western forms are utilized and include materials such as split bamboo, rattan, wicker, penshell, abaca, faux tortoise and exotic burls. This gathering includes many of our strongest categories; occasional tables, dining tables, chairs, cocktail tables, and lighting, as well as wall décor, mirrors and a wide variety of decorative objects.

Furniture Market Review
Along with the esteemed ‘Consumer Allure’ acclaim, Maitland-Smith enjoyed an especially successful fall Furniture Market overall. Along with our own personal success, this year saw increases in the number of first-time visitors to the High Point Market, as well as the return of another several thousand buyers that hadn't registered for the market within the past two years or more.

American Red Cross Sponsorship
Maitland-Smith is proud to have donated a portion of the furniture market revenues to the American Red Cross. Supported by community donations, the American Red Cross is a nationwide network of volunteers dedicated to saving lives and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, offering emergency assistance and disaster relief.
